Crochet Gryffindor Inspired Scarf

Gryffindor Scarf Free Crochet Pattern

Friends, I am excited to share this Harry Potter Gryffindor scarf that I just finished crocheting for my son Eion. This is a very easy pattern and can be made in a couple of hours. I actually made this during E’s naptime! It completes the Harry Potter costume that Hubby got for the little man earlier this year and I’m just so grateful to be relieved from brainstorming a costume for Halloween. You, see, the past two years have been a whirlwind that we were not able to dress him up – the first year was all about preparing for his first birthday party that I totally forgot about Halloween, and then the following year we had bad colds and flu I did not have enough time and energy to make something. We ended up putting a car racer outfit together for him using what we have at home. So you can say I’m really looking forward to this year’s Halloween because it would be our first official Halloween, and we get to be Harry Potter for a day! Yay! While my two year old won’t even remember any of these moments, I certainly will.

MATERIALS:
• Yarn: Any worsted weight yarn (I used Red Heart’s yarn color red and golden yellow, approximately 70 yards for each color)
• Hook: 4.0mm crochet hook / US G-6 / UK 8
• Small item with a stiff cardboard to make a fringe

ABBREVIATION/STITCHES:
• ch – chain
• dc – double crochet (US) / tr – treble (UK)
• sts – stitches
• f/o – fasten off
• (N sts) – number of stitches in a round after finishing round.

NOTES:
Finished scarf measures 3.5″ x 43″ (fringe included). You can add stitches to make the scarf wider and more sets of rounds to increase the length. Any variations to hook size and yarn weight will result in a different sized scarf.

PATTERN

Begin with chain 17 using yarn color red.
Round 1: dc in 3rd chain from hook and each of the next 13 chain. Turn. (15 sts)
Note: From here onwards, beginning 2 chains are considered as one dc stitch.
Round 2: ch 2, dc in the next 13 sts, last dc in the 2nd ch of the beginning chains of previous round. Turn. (15 sts)
Round 3-7: repeat Round 2. But on Round 7, leave the last 2 loops of the last dc undone then proceed to the next steps.

Switching yarn color:
Catch yarn color gold and pull a loop through the two loops of last dc on Round 7, leaving approximately 4 inches tail. This time you may cut yarn color red leaving a 4 inches tail as well.

Hold the tails on the top of the unworked stitches. Crochet normally and hide the tail inside the stitches. You don’t have to sew them in and they won’t come undone, just cut any excess yarn afterwards.

Repeat the same steps from Round 2 after switching yarn color. Complete 7 rounds before switching yarn color. For this project, I’ve completed 105 rounds (8 sets using yarn color red and 7 sets using yarn color gold). Note that the final set of rounds should be made using yarn color red.

Adding fringe/tassels:
I made a total of 6 fringe using yarn color gold and 4 fringe using yarn color red. Five fringe on each end of the scarf.

Steps:
Get something to wind your yarn around like a stiff piece of cardboard that is approximately 4″x7″, depending on the length you want the fringe. I used a packaging cardboard from my pen.

Wind the yarn several times, loosely enough that you can get scissors underneath it to cut.

Cut the yarn at both ends of the cardboard.

You should have several pieces of yarn now, all the same length. Decide how many pieces of yarn you want to use together. I used five pieces together for this scarf.

Starting with the gold fringe, fold your pieces evenly.

Insert your crochet hook into the first post dc of the scarf’s Round 1.

Catch the five pieces of yarn folded in half with the crochet hook and pull them through the post dc. This gives you one big loop, do not remove the crochet hook in the loop.

Catch the tail ends with the crochet hook and pull them through the loop you just made.

Pull on the tail ends evenly to draw them down snugly, but not too tightly.

Repeat the same steps alternately putting the red and gold fringe. Do the same to the other end of scarf. If you want to, trim the ends to even them up and the scarf is done.
