Eion’s Crochet Visor Beanie

Crochet Cap Pattern for Toddlers

Last month has been very busy but no matter how busy it was, I still managed to finish this Crochet Toddler Visor Beanie project that I’ve been meaning to make for Eion’s 3rd birthday. I must admit, as I write this post I’m getting a bit emotional because I realized my little boy is growing way too fast! Where have all of those three years gone? Yesterday, I had to browse through my camera roll just to see his baby pictures and videos once again. I remember when he was an infant the only thing he wanted was me. In some ways this is still true but at three, he is becoming more independent. I know I can’t freeze time so everyday I try to slow down and enjoy each moment with him – more than anything else our snuggles in bed while we sing his favorite nursery songs or while he tells me stories in his own bubbly language that only him can understand for now. And because he also loves playing outdoors, I thought of making this cotton beanie that he would surely love to wear while exploring the world. At first I really don’t know how to design it. Then I thought l want something that will match Eion’s personality (playful, curious and sweet) and something that will represent my boundless love for him, so I tried designing the pattern in rounds with multiples of “8” which I believe is the perfect number to signify the concept of infinity. I’m just grateful it turned out the way I want it to be plus it’s a great pattern for those who haven’t attempted making headwear before.

Do not fasten off. From here, we will begin crocheting the LINING on to the cap. Make sure you have 8 stitch markers ready, you can also use short pieces of yarn as markers.

Dividing the total number of stitches from the last Round to 8 parts, count 12 stitches from the last stitch made. Place stitch marker in the 12th stitch. Repeat steps until you have marked 8 points around the cap edge.

Start crocheting the lining using slip stitch method. **Slip stitch 18 going to the top center, plus 1 slip stitch to switch to next lining.

Slip stitch 18 going down to the first stitch marker.

Slip stitch to each of the next 12 stitches across going to the next stitch marker. Do steps from ** 4 times.

Do not fasten off. From here we will start crocheting the VISOR.

Round 1: ch 1, sc in the same st, sc in the next 9 sts, (inc, sc 2) 5 times, inc, sc in the next 10 sts. Turn. (42 sts)
Round 2: ch 1, skipping first st, sl st in next st, dec, sc in the next 3 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts, dc in the next 22 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts, sc in the next 3 sts, dec. Leave the last 2 sts undone. Turn. (36 sts)
Round 3: ch 1, skipping first st, sl st in next st, dec, sc in the next 28 sts, dec. Leave the last 2 sts undone. Turn. (30 sts)
Round 4: ch 1, skipping first st, sl st in next st, dec, sc in the next 22 sts, dec. Leave the last 2 sts undone. Turn. (24 sts)

Do not fasten off. From here we will start crocheting the EDGING:

Ch 1, skipping first st, sc in the next 23 sts, sc 8 into the side of visor. Continue to work around the edging of the cap, **sc in each of the next 12 post slip stitches, sc in each of the next 12 single crochet stitches. Do steps from ** 2 times, sc in each of the next 12 post slip stitches, sc 8 into the other side of visor. Slip stitch to the first sc made. Fasten off and weave in ends.

BUTTON:
Begin with a magic ring, the end tail is inserted to the right side of your work.
Round 1: sc 8, slip stitch in the first sc made to join.
Round 2: ch 1, (sc, inc) 4x, slip stitch in the first sc made to join. (12 sts)
Round 3: ch 1, sc in each of the 12 sts around, slip stitch in the first sc made.

Turn the work inside out, you should have the wrong side outside. Sew the button onto the top center of the cap.

NUMBER 3 PATCH:
I made the patch using the Moogly Crochet Numbers free pattern by Tamara Kelly. I used the 3.5mm crochet hook and blue yarn.

Sew the patch onto the front of the cap using running stitch method and now you’re all done. Don’t forget to have fun making memories with your little ones!
