Star Stitch Cup Coaster Cozy

Star Stitch Cup Coaster Cozy Free Pattern

Not wanting to be limited to what was available in store, I took the time to design and make several handmade gifts despite the hustle and bustle of last Christmas season. Among the items I made, this 2-in-1 cup coaster cozy is one of my favorite crochet gift and stash busting project. This is a really easy pattern once you get the hang of it. It works up quicky and uses one of my favorite crochet stitches – the Star Stitch.

Though I’ve been crocheting for a long time now, I just learned about this stitch last summer when I came across Craft Passion’s Crochet Star Stitch Tote while searching Google for a perfect Mother’s Day gift that I can make for mama. Inspired by their pattern, I made a purse for her and since then I became obsessed with making different items using the stitch. It was so nice learning and using a different stitch after getting used to making projects with only the basic crochet stitches.

The pattern for this coaster cozy will fit a standard 10-12oz straight up cup measuring 4 inches high and 3.75 inches in diameter. If you are making one for a wider cup, adjust your coaster as needed (each star stitch is worked over two stitches, so if you need to add a star stitch, add two more increases), and add more rounds if your cup is taller. You also want to leave about a 1.5″ gap where you will work the button closure later on. I included step-by-step pictures on how to work the star stitch for this project but if you need additional guide, you may checkout a very helpful video tutorial from The Crochet Crowd that I also followed to master the basic star stitch. It will give you a clear overview on how to do this amazingly elegant stitch.

MATERIALS:
• Yarn: Any worsted weight cotton yarn (I used Gantsilyo Guru’s Milk Cotton Light yarn in mustard and orchid color, approximately 29 meters for each mug).
• Hook: 4.0mm crochet hook / US G/5 / UK 8
• Medium size button (I used wooden buttons from iCre8).

ABBREVIATION/STITCHES:
• Magic ring
• sc – single crochet (US) / dc – double crochet (UK)
• st(s) – stitch(es)
• sl st – slip stitch
• inc – increase
• Star Stitch
• hdc – half double crochet
• asterisk(s) – repeat the steps between **
• (N sts) – number of stitches in a round after finishing round.

NOTES:
– Coaster portion is worked in continuous rounds, do not slip stitch to join. Mark the first stitch of each round by using a stitch marker or a piece of yarn.
– At round 9, I began working back and forth in rounds.

PATTERN:

Begin with a magic ring.
Round 1: sc 6
Round 2: inc 6 times (12 sts)
Round 3: inc 12 imes (24 sts)
Round 4: [sc, inc] 12 times (36 sts)
Round 5: sc around (36 sts)
Round 6: [sc 2, inc] 12 times (48 sts)
Round 7-8: sc around (48 sts)

At this point, we’re already done with the coaster part. The next rounds will be all about the Star Stitch. So if you are a beginner crocheter, this will be the best opportunity to practice this stitch.

Round 9: Chain 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and pull a loop. Insert hook in the side loops (spike) of last sc made and pull a loop. Insert hook in the same st where the last sc was worked and pull a loop. *Insert hook in the next st and pull a loop. Repeat * in next st (you should have 6 loops on your hook). Catch yarn over and pull through all 6 loops. Chain 1 to close your first star stitch.

Subsequent Star Stitch: **Insert hook in the center (eye) of the previous star stitch and pull a loop. Insert hook into the space between the two last “spikes” from the previous “star” and pull a loop. Insert hook in the same st where the last spike of previous star was worked and pull a loop. *Insert hook in the next stitch and pull a loop. Repeat * in the next stitch (you should have 6 loops on your hook now). Catch yarn over and pull through all 6 loops. Chain 1 to close the second star. Repeat steps from ** 20 times, hdc in the same st where the last spike of the last star stitch was worked. Turn. This leaves you 3 unworked sts. (22 star sts and 1 hdc st)

Round 11: Chain 3, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and pull a loop. Insert hook in next ch and pull a loop. *Insert hook in the first stitch and pull a loop. Repeat * in next two sts (you should have 6 loops on your hook). Catch yarn over and pull through all 6 loops. Chain 1 to close the first star stitch. Repeat Subsequent Star Stitch steps 21 times, hdc in the same st where the last spike of the last star stitch was worked. Turn. (22 star sts and 1 hdc st)

Round 12: repeat Round 10
Round 13: repeat Round 11
Round 14: repeat Round 10
Round 15: repeat Round 11
Round 16: repeat Round 10
Round 17: repeat Round 11
Round 18: Do not turn. Chain 1, sc evenly down the edge (I made 13 sts), sc in the same st where the last hdc of Round 9 was worked, sc across the 4 base sts and up the other edge (I made 14 sts). Working across the sts of last Round, **sc in the first st, sc in the eye of star stitch. Repeat steps from ** 21 times. Sl st to join in the first sc, chain 25, sl st in the same st. Fasten off and weave ends.
